Welcome to One Car Garage, in which I choose a manufacturer, and you decide one single vehicle that they make or made (no matter how old, no matter how exclusive) to live with for the rest of your life. This is your only vehicle, and all expenses are paid for, including price of entry, insurance, gas, etc.
Having just taken a trip to my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I think it's time for us to head back over to Europe. Specifically Germany, where we'll be cracking open Volkswagen Group with their namesake automotive brand.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I'm going to go ahead and break from my norm of choosing sexy sports cars and have myself a pre-facelift first generation Touareg V10 TDI. Though a handsome vehicle indeed, I wouldn't go so far as to call it sexy. This incredibly capable machine, though visually diminutive, packs quite an impressive punch. It's V10 TDI pushes out 553 lb/ft of torque and 309 bhp. Though there is one trim-level above the V10, I feel that the R50 would prove to be less capable with it's ground effects and stiffened suspension. I'll have a white one, please.
What's your choice?

Volkswagen Phaeton W12. Because, did you hear me say W12? Also, I'm sure it's plenty comfortable and reliable.

I don't even think I can do this. Love your choice, would love a Vanagon Synchro (Full Westy), Polo WRC, Scirocco 16V, Race Toureg, Phaeton, and the list goes on. Nope. Can't choose.

EASY :) the LWB Phaeton with the V10 Diesel, in dark blue with a tan interior.
This one is the SWB but the only picture I could find with the correct colour.

The Nardo is cool if you're a 12 year old :P
Personally I'd have the best car ever built.

I'm not sure what expenses you are talking about. If you mean the price, a w12 with 60k miles on it costs under $20k. Actually KBB lists it a $16,800.

Unless the Veyron counts (which I guess would make any Audi or Lamborghini up for grabs as well...), the best car with a VW badge is clearly the Phaeton.

Thank you for never disappointing us.

Difficult question. My first choice was a MK1 GTI but then I remembered that my country have snow on the ground 5/12 of the year.

I believe they are lovingly referred to as G( renade) 60s by their owners.

I know - I was referring to your ownership ;)

VW Golf Country
Can't argue with a lifted Golf with Syncro and the spare wheel on the hatch. It's the only VW I'd have.

Jag knows what he's talking about, he has a Phaeton

Be honest, you're lurking in here to see how many people choose your car, aren't you? ;)
![]() 08/28/2013 at 14:55 |

Well the price leaves a service budget so it might not be that bad of a deal. I guess it just comes down to how willing you are to have it in the shop as opposed to your garage.

For me, it has to be the DOKA. Four seats, truck bed, off road ability, and rear engined.

Same here. I like this car way too much not to pick it, though I'd probably hesitate for a moment when having to decide between the Scirocco and a classic Golf...

VW Type III wagon. Sqareback. Wooooooo!

Wouldn't a Mk I GTi be brilliant on snow with the right tyres? Small, light, FWD, and a relatively heavy engine with all its weight over the driven wheels.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 16:30 |
|
Maybe I'm not entering into the spirit, but every time I see this question I end up picking something that'll be useful for the rest of my life, so I can have a fun car with my own money. So in this case a Passat estate.
Unless the VW Veyron counts.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 16:31 |
|
I'd really pick a W12 Phaeton, or blue '04 R32, or even the Nardo concept in yellow, but I'm going to throw this one out there for fun: Beetle Rsi. It's forbidden fruit, it's got sleeper potential, it looks like someone slapped on a body kit because they could. I like it
![]() 08/28/2013 at 16:35 |
|
It's fun to see how different people approach the question. I'd absolutely love to see so many of these people live with their choices (me with my Ford RS200 from yesterday, or half the people with their GT40s). I like seeing the sensible choices people come up with too. The idea though, is that you won't be able to have any other car, not even one you finance yourself. I think that's what makes the question such a difficult one.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 16:35 |
|
Going to say Scirrocco R because I love hatchbacks and the Phaeton has been said about a million times already (for good reason).
Actually, bump that, I want a Passat Wagon with the W8. Wagon plus V8 makes me smile.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:01 |

Damn, I forgot about that one. Good choice

![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:05 |

Yeah, but what does it really mean for something to be your 'only' car? Is my wife allowed a car too? (She doesn't drive, that's me trying to cheat again.) What about rentals?
The problem is that I don't have kids right now but I will one day, so if I'm never allowed to drive anything else, I can only pick something with seven or eight seats for those few years I will need that, and I'll then be stuck with it for the rest of my life. But that's not really in the spirit either.
If the Veyon's allowed, though, that's worth all the hassle it would be trying to deal with a family if I couldn't drive any other car.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:07 |
|
Brilliant 350 days of the year, absolutely yes. Since the fifteen lefts are my favorites of the year , I had to choose an adequate compromise.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:11 |
|
I've never driven in that much snow, but does it make much difference? I'd have thought a first-gen Golf on snow tyres would handle that just fine. Glide over the top...
![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:21 |
|
My first car was a first gen Accent, base model, power nothing. Up to 5-6 inches of medium-heavy snow it was fine, you had to have a shovel at hand to get out of your driveway but you could laboriously get moving. A good AWD car would laugh of such amount. The laughs makes all the difference in the world.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:31 |
|
The Accent weighs at least 25% more. That means the Golf will be able to cope with 25% more snow, right?
![]() 08/28/2013 at 17:35 |
|
I think it's up to you to interpret the question as you will, though the way I pose it, I have in mind that it is the only vehicle that will every be registered to you. Your wife can play too, and it may behoove you to convince her to pick something more practical, so you can have something more fun. Also, you'll be allowed to rent a vehicle, like a U-Haul or something similar if you need to move, though leasing is out of the question. Also, you can still borrow a friend's vehicle.
As far as the Veyron goes, we'll get to Bugatti eventually. ;)
![]() 08/28/2013 at 18:55 |
|
It depend on where do you save that mass, if most of it is above the rear axle it will be an advantage yes. With a very light rear end the turning point will be when the snow start to rub under the floor or pile up in front, you will then appreciate the additional traction of an AWD system.
![]() 08/28/2013 at 19:07 |
|
Well, the Golf's a lot shorter. The only way to know for sure is for you to buy one and test it out. Still, at least that's your next car chosen.
![]() 08/29/2013 at 14:06 |
|
I agree with your choice
Because who needs anything more than 10 cylinders pumping diesel with the assistance of 2 turbochargers.
My first car might actually be a v10 touareg. If not, it's gonna be a V8 one.

Welp, seeing as the Bugatti Veyron doesn't count, I'd be tempted to go with the Phaeton W12. Or a Passat W8 estate just for the hell of it.
Actually no, Phaeton.
